College Welcomes Students to 2009 with Free Health
[06/01/2009]As the Christmas decorations came down, Otley College welcomed students to 2009 by handing out free meals.
The 'Happy New Year' gesture offered a healthy meal deal in a bid to ease learners back into the educational groove.
This time of year has been commonly associated with the term 'January blues'.
"Post Christmas, people generally tend to have overspent and after two weeks of relaxation, the prospect of restarting the daily routine can initially seem like a minor shock to the system," said Janet Perry, Otley's head of student services.
"The college is always very keen to support our students - and as people tend to overspend over Christmas - we thought we would try and ease this burden a little whilst also welcoming our learners back to the college for the start of 2009," she added.
About 60 percent of students took up the offer.
One of those who enjoyed pasta, followed by fruit and a healthy cookie, Holly Burcombe said, "It was a nice gesture by the college and I certainly enjoyed my meal."
"It can be difficult at this time of year - especially as it is so cold at the moment - but all things told, I am really looking forward to the next 12 months."
