12 youngsters from Somersham Primary School attended Otley College where they planted 30 trees as part of the national tree celebration.
(The trees were Silver Birches, Cherry and Rowan’s).
National Tree Week is an annual event that has been held since 1975.
The week - that was created by The Tree Council - is aimed at being the UK’s largest tree awareness event, taking place at the beginning of the winter tree planting season.
This is the second time that the primary school has visited Otley. Earlier this year, youngsters got a tour of the animal studies area where they were got a chance to meet some new born lambs.
This time, staff and students from the Otley arboriculture (tree surgery) and countryside management teams were on hand to make sure the event went smoothly.
Lynette Allison, from the Primary School, said, “We received a number of trees from the Woodland Trust and wanted to incorporate the topic of the environment into lessons during National Tree Week.”
“So our students went to Otley and planted some trees and had a really fun and interesting afternoon.”
College spokesperson, John Nice, said, “It was great to see the Somersham students again in an event that coincided with an important date in the environmental calendar.”
“The Somersham students were really well behaved and we hope to invite the students back to the college in the future, to see how the trees have grown.”
