The actors and dancers were from Red Rose Chain theatre and film company, based in Ipswich, Suffolk.
They performed a play called Strictly Body & Soul that was commissioned by NHS East of England.
The production fused theatre, dance and an interactive workshop to “involve young people in a broad exploration of sexual health and relationship issues,” according to Artistic director of Red Rose Chain, Joanna Carrick.
“I believe that we have the ability to positively affect the sexual health of a very high number of students across this region and watching the play and openly discussing issues surrounding pregnancy and STIs, could make a real difference to an individual’s life and the choices they make,” she added.
The visit is part of a big campaign that will see the theatre company perform in front of 6000 students throughout the East of England in a bid to give young people “education about contraception, health and relationships, that will allow them to make informed decisions,” said Dr Paul Cosford who is the Regional Director of Public Health for NHS East of England.
College spokesperson, John Nice, said, “The visit was a great experience for our students. The interactive nature of the production really seemed to work well and the actors did a marvellous job by performing a play that was both interesting and educational.”
“We definitely hope to welcome the excellent Red Rose Chain company back to the college in the future,” he added.
