Three years part-time

Course Summary

This course is designed to help achieve the requirements of Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status for those who support and/or teach learners in the lifelong learning sector, including further education, work-based learning, adult and community learning, prison education service or the voluntary sector.  This course offers the opportunity for those who do not hold a degree level qualification in their specialist area to enhance their vocational subject knowledge to professional standards whilst becoming qualified teachers/trainers/tutors.

Course Structure

Modules include: Theories of Teaching and Learning, Assessment, Classroom Management, Theories of Teaching and Learning Assessment, The Management of Learning, Classroom Behaviour, Classroom Communications, Responding to Challenging People, Current Educational Training Issues, Work-Based Learning, Basic Skills Provision, Research Skills and Problem-Solving.

Work Placements

The programme will include a teaching practice placement and a two week summer school before the start of the second year that will complete the requirements for the mandatory threshold award Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS).

Assessment

Assessment is based on the student’s employment in the lifelong learning sector, where possible, using a variety of methods such as assignments, group projects, presentations, the analysis of case studies and classroom observations.


After the Course

This qualification provides the essential requirements for career advancement opportunities in further education colleges, schools delivering 14-19 education, adult and community education, training organisations, prison education and training.  This degree will also provide students with the opportunity to progress to the final year of a related Honours degree at UCS.
