Horse Management Extended Diploma

Aim of course

The aim of this 3 days a week course is for you to develop further knowledge and continue to practise your skills.

What does the course involve?

Students will study a variety of units which will include equine business management, anatomy and physiology, equine nutrition, competition tack, event management, behaviour and welfare, principles of equitation. The secondary qualifications attached to this course are: award in the safe use of veterinary medicines, award in business management for the environment and functional skills.

A non riding route is also an option.

What qualifications do I need?

This two year full time course requries 4 GCSEs at grade C or above including English, maths, science or an equivalent Level 2 diploma. This course is also subject to a riding assessment if taking the riding option. Mature students will be considered on an individual basis.

What equipment do I need?

Clothing for general yard duties and riding

• Hard hat or skull cap to the national standards (PAS 015 or BS EN 1384)

• Blue or black silk

• Hair net

• Long or short sleeved Otley College polo shirt (can be purchased from the Equine Department at the start of term)

• Otley College sweatshirt (can be purchased from the Equine Department at the start of term)

• Jodhpurs or breeches, plain coloured

• Gloves

• Fitted and approved body protector

• Wellington boots

• Waterproof warm coat for outdoor duties (Dark colour or Otley College coat, can be purchased from the Equine Department at the start of term)

• Long riding boots or short boots and chaps/gaiters (please note that Mountain Horse High Rider boots with the thick sole are NOT permitted for riding, Richmond/Caliber and Sportive Mountain horse boots are permitted

Students on the non riding route will require all the above with the exception of a body protector

Classroom activities

• Coloured pens

• Lever arch file

• Notepad

• Pens and pencils

• Dividers for lever arch file

• Memory stick for saving student’s computerised work is useful

What can I do after the course?

On completion of the course you could begin your career in the Equine Industry or progress onto the UCS Otley Coundation degree in Animal Science and Welfare (Equine Health)
