Aim of course
The Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Animal Management is a full-time vocational course studied over one year. The course is suited to students who wish to pursue a career in the animal care industry and offers an opportunity to work with a range of animals including dogs, rodents, reptiles and farm livestock. Students will develop vocational skills in animal handling and husbandry, health and dietary management, breeding and animal biology.
There is the opportunity to progress into a second year to achieve a L3 Diploma in Animal Management.
What does the course involve?
The course offers a blend of theory, task-based learning, tutorials and practical workshops at college combined with field visits and work experience in the animal care industry. Those who progress onto the L3 Diploma will be required to complete 300 hours at a work placement. Typical placements may include kennels, catteries, pet shops, farms, farm parks, zoos, animal sanctuaries, animal rescue centres and veterinary practices. The course offers a range of assessment methods including practical demonstrations, presentations, projects, reports, essays and posters. All assessed work is graded as pass, merit or distinction.
Course contents
The course is delivered two days per week over two semesters. To achieve the Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Animal Management students are required to achieve 60 credits from seven modules and further 60 credits from six modules in second year to achieve the L3 Diploma.
Semester 1 Year 1 Subsidiary Diploma:-
Animal Health, Animal Biology, Practical Animal Feeding, Animal Handling & Safe Working.
Semester 2 Year 1 Subsidiary Diploma:-
Animal Health, Animal Anatomy & Physiology, Maintaining Animal Accommodation, Animal Behaviour & Communication.
Semester 1 Year 2 Diploma:-
Animal Nutrition, Animal Welfare & Breed Development, Exotic Animal Health & Husbandry.
Semester 2 Year 2 Diploma:-
Animal Nutrition, Animal Breeding & Genetics, Zoological Animal Health & Husbandry, Work-related Experience

Students will undertake practical workshops in the animal unit at the college which accommodates a variety of animal species including ferrets, rabbits, lizards, snakes, parrots, tropical fish, sheep, pigs and alpacas.

What qualifications do I need?
This course is suited to students who hold four GCSEs at grade C or above including Maths, English and Science, or hold the Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care qualification.What equipment do I need?
Students will need protective clothing and strong footwear for practical sessions. A blue tunic and steel toe-capped boots can be ordered from a local supplier.What can I do after the course?
Students can progress onto the NPTC Level 3 Diploma in Animal Management for a further year. Students must aim to achieve at merit or above to progress onto the L3 Diploma.Alternatively, students may seek employment in animal welfare and rescue centres, animal sanctuaries, pet retail outlets, zoos and safari parks, veterinary practices, kennels and catteries and dog grooming parlours.
