Fish Management - Level 3 Extended Diploma

Aim of course
You will receive an excellent grounding in a wide range of fish management practices and principles suitable for those wishing to gain employment in more technical areas of the sports fisheries, fish farming and ornamental aquatics industries.
What does the course involve?
The course is split approximately 50/50 between practical and theory work. Practical work will take place onsite in the fisheries unit and out in the field at a range of fisheries around East Anglia. The course also involves related visits to a range of places including fish farms, fish wholesalers and ornamental retailers.
Assessment is by means of written assignments and projects as well as practical observation.
Duration: 3 days per week over two years.
Course contents
A very wide ranging course that provides scientifically based practical training for those wanting to gain employment within sports fisheries, angling, fish farming, ornamental aquatics and all related industries.There are 18 units of study which include angling, carp farming, fisheries management, water quality, fish biology and behaviour, estate skills, fish health and welfare, river fishery creation and management, ornamental pool design and aquatics management.
The course will also include two periods of work experience in the industry in order to give students valuable skills and help build links with employers that may lead to full time jobs.
What qualifications do I need?
Four C’s at GCSE in English, Maths and Science or a BTEC Level 2 Diploma. This is also an ideal course for mature applicants, suitability will be decided on an individual basis.
All candidates are expected to demonstrate a strong interest in fishery subjects and a commitment to coursework.
What equipment do I need?
Lever Arch File, USB Memory Stick, Chestwaders, Steel Toe Capped Boots, Overall/Lab Coat and an Environment Agency Rod Licence.What can I do after the course?
You could gain employment with a range of responsible jobs in the fish farming and ornamental aquatics industries, as well as commercial sport fisheries.Alternatively there is potential for progression onto the FdSc Fishery Management and Sustainable Aquaculture at UCS Otley
