Carpentry Diploma (Level 2)

Code: OCDI2F010
Level: 2, Type: Full Time

Aim of course

This course is for anyone who would like to be employed as a carpenter or for applicants with some experience in carpentry who wish to achieve a recognised qualification. This course is also offered with attendance of three days/week over two years for applicants aged 16 - 19 with no experience of carpentry (Course code OCDI2F031).

What will the course involve?

The course contains a mixture of practical assessments and theory culminating in a final online examination. Candidates aged 16-19 yrs will also study a Level 2 NCFE qualification which researches project management and one Functional Skill. The Functional Skill will be studied as an integral part of both the Diploma and NCFE qualifications.

Course Content

The course has a mainly practical bias covering all aspects of carpentry and joinery, including 1st and 2nd fixing and use of power tools. Areas of study include: floors/roofs; doors/windows; studwork; stairs; woodworking machines; site organisation and safety; panelling and cladding; kitchen fitting; power tools and equipment; access equipment; preparation and assembly of joinery products. 16-19 year old learners will study an additional qualification (NCFE Creative Craft) which researches project management.

As 16-19 yr old learners study several qualifications, you will attend college for three days a week, mature students only study the Level 2 Diploma and need only attend for two days (these days will be decided by the Course Tutor to ensure that all areas are covered).

What can I do afterwards?

On completion of this course you would be considered for a part-time Level 3 Diploma or NVQ 2 in Wood Occupations. As the NVQ is only assessed in the workplace, you would need to find employment with a company whose work covered all the required units of the NVQ.

What do I need?

Numeracy and literacy skills at Level 1 would be an advantage. Applicants aged 19+ may study the part-time option (1 day/week over 2 years).

You will be asked to carry out a skills assessment to determine the support you require to be successful on this course.
