Aim of course
This course is for those candidates wishing to progress into employment as a bricklayer or applicants with a bricklaying bias who wish to achieve a qualification. This course is also offered with attendance of 3 days/week over two years for applicants aged 16-19 with no experience of bricklaying (Course code OCDI2F011)What will the course involve?
The course contains a mixture of theory and practical activity covering all aspects of bricklaying. Candidates aged 16-19 yrs will also study a Level 2 NCFE qualification and one Functional Skill. The Functional Skill will be studied as an integral part of both the Diploma and NCFE qualifications.Course Content
The course has a practical bias covering all areas of the bricklaying craft and associated subjects. Assessment is based on course work and externally set examinations. Areas of study include: mortar mixes; brick/block laying; setting out; power tools and equipment; site organisation and safety; simple scaffolding; slinging and signalling. 16-19 year old learners will study an additional qualification (NCFE Creative Craft) which researches project management.As 16-19 yr old learners study several qualifications, you will attend college for three days a week, mature students only study the Level 2 Diploma and need only attend for two days (these days will be decided by the Course Tutor to ensure that all areas are covered).
What can I do afterwards?
On completion of this course you would be considered for a part-time Level 3 Diploma or NVQ 2 in Trowel Occupations. As the NVQ is only assessed in the workplace, you would need to find employment with a company whose work covered all the required units of the NVQ.What do I need?
Numeracy and literacy skills at Level 1 would be an advantage. Applicants aged 19+ may study the part-time option (1 day/week over 2 years).You will be asked to carry out a skills assessment to determine the support you require to be successful on this course.
