Aim of course
The Level 3 Extended Diploma in Animal Management is a full-time vocational course studied over two years. The course is suited to students who wish to pursue a career in the animal care industry or progress to degree level and offers an opportunity to work with a range of animals including dogs, rodents, reptiles and farm livestock. Students will develop vocational skills in animal handling and husbandry, health and dietary management, breeding and animal biology and animal science research.What does the course involve?
The course offers a blend of theory, task-based learning, tutorials and practical workshops at college combined with field visits and work experience in the animal care industry. Typical placements may include kennels, catteries, pet shops, farms, farm parks, zoos, animal sanctuaries, animal rescue centres and veterinary practices. Students are required to complete 300 hours at a work placement to achieve this qualification.The course offers a range of assessment methods including practical demonstrations, presentations, projects, reports, essays and posters. All assessed work is graded as pass, merit or distinction.
Course contents
The course is delivered three days per week over two semesters. To achieve the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Animal Care students are required to achieve 180 credits from nineteen modules. Students can choose one of three pathways in year two depending on career interest.Year 1 Semester 1:-
Animal Biology, Practical Animal Feeding, Animal Handling & Safe Working, Animal Health, Investigative Project and Work-related Experience.
Year 1 Semester 2:-
Animal Anatomy & Physiology, Maintaining Animal Accommodation, Animal Behaviour & Communication, Animal Nutrition, Investigative Project and Work-related Experience.
Year 2:-
Animal Science Pathway - Fundamentals of Science, Principles of Chemistry for Biological & Medical Science, Biochemistry & Microbiology, Animal Breeding & Genetics, Exotic Health Management & Husbandry, Zoological Animal Health & Husbandry, Principles of Animal Nursing, Farm Livestock Husbandry.
Wildlife Management Pathway - Fundamentals of Science OR Aquatics Husbandry & Management, Practice of Wildlife Population Surveys, Ecology & Conservation, Wildlife Management & Rehabilitation, Animal Breeding & Genetics, Exotic Health Management & Husbandry, Zoological Animal Health & Husbandry, Principles of Animal Nursing, Farm Livestock Husbandry.
Animal Management Pathway - Aquatics Husbandry & Management OR Kennel & Cattery Management, Animal Training, Wildlife Management & Rehabilitation, Animal Breeding & Genetics, Exotic Health Management & Husbandry, Zoological Animal Health & Husbandry, Principles of Animal Nursing, Farm Livestock Husbandry.
Students will undertake practical workshops in the animal unit at the college which accommodates a variety of animal species including ferrets, rabbits, lizards, snakes, parrots, tropical fish, sheep, pigs and alpacas.
