Aim of course

The Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care is a full-time vocational course studied over one year. The course is suited to students who wish to pursue a career in the animal care industry and offers an opportunity to work with a range of animals including dogs, rodents, reptiles and farm livestock. Students will develop vocational skills in animal handling, health care, feeding and animal biology.

What does the course involve?

The course offers a blend of theory, task-based learning, tutorials and practical workshops at college combined with field visits and work experience in the animal care industry. Typical placements may include kennels, catteries, pet shops, farms, farm parks, zoos, animal sanctuaries, animal rescue centres and veterinary practices. Students are required to complete 150 hours at a work placement to achieve this qualification.

The course offers a range of assessment methods including practical demonstrations, presentations, projects, reports, essays and posters. All assessed work is graded as pass, merit or distinction.

Course contents

The course is delivered three days per week over two semesters. To achieve the Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care students are required to achieve 60 credits from seven modules. Students can choose one optional module from three in the second semester.

Semester 1:-

Animal Biology, Practical Animal Feeding, Behaviour & Handling, Work-related Experience.

Semester 2:-

Animal Health & Welfare, Maintaining Animal Accommodation, Work-related Experience.

Select one from three:

Care of Exotics OR Breeds & Grooming OR Care of Farm Livestock

Students will undertake practical workshops in the animal unit at the college which accommodates a variety of animal species including ferrets, rabbits, lizards, snakes, parrots, tropical fish, sheep, pigs and alpacas.

What qualifications do I need?

This course is suited to students who hold three GCSEs in Maths, English and Science at grade D or above, or hold a Level 1 qualification in Animal Care.

What equipment do I need?

Students will need protective clothing and strong footwear for practical sessions. A blue long-sleeved tunic and steel toe-capped boots can be ordered from a local supplier. Wellington boots will be required for those who select the Care of Farm Livestock module option.

What can I do after the course?

Students can progress onto the NPTC Level 3 Diploma in Animal Management for a further one year or the NPTC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Animal Management for a further two years. Students must aim to achieve at merit or above to progress onto the level three qualifications.

Alternatively, students may seek employment in animal welfare and rescue centres, animal sanctuaries, pet retail outlets, kennels and catteries and dog grooming parlours.
