Animal Studies

Our student of the year is currently training to be a Vet at the Royal Vet School in London. She started on a course at Otley and is now fulfilling her lifelong ambition.

Other Otley learners go on and work with animal sanctuaries, for charities, in zoos, as vet nurses - in fact every conceivable range of careers in the animal industry.

Whilst the majority of our learners study on further education courses, we also have a new higher education programme in conjunction with the new University Campus Suffolk.

Last year a group from Otley (who were studying on a foundation degree) went on a safari trip to South Africa.

The department is an evolving beast, so to speak.

A new dog-grooming parlour has just been opened. We have small animals, exotics, our own livestock (that is purely kept for showing and breeding purposes) alpacas and our own aquatic unit.

The courses are part classroom, part practical. The idea is to give learners the skills they need to get the job they desire and we regularly invite learned practitioners into lessons to give students different skills and career aspirations.

Ultimately, this is one of the colleges most popular departments run by people who are equally enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the subject they teach.

Regular charity fundraising events are held throughout the year as well where students are given an opportunity to gain event management experience and general organisation skills that will be invaluable in the working world.
